Experiences with Natural Dyes
Our Oregon Botanical Dye Workshop will be seasonally offered at Mud&Craft for those interested in natural dye methods with locally sourced flowers. Participants in this course are able to learn different botanical dyeing methods and make their own t-shirt, tank top or towel.
In this course we use two natural dye methods, flower and leaf pounding or bundle dyeing. Each workshop is separate, the flower pounding method or the bundle dyeing method. Flower pounding uses fresh flowers and leaves and bundle dyeing uses fresh or dried flowers. The flower and leaf pounding method, known as Tataki Zome, is a method of transferring pigments into a textile by hammering them onto the fabric. Bundle dyeing, also known as eco printing, is a natural dyeing method where bundles of dried plant material are submerged into hot water. This is an ideal art class in Oregon for anyone interested in eco-friendly dyeing methods and creating their own earthy designs to take home! We also want to emphasize that this is an intro experience to botanical dyeing and not a full lesson in dyeing.
Oregon Coast Visiting Artists
Mud&Craft also offers a variety of classes and workshops from visiting artists around the Pacific Northwest and Oregon. From basket weaving, broom making and jewelry making, many local and visiting artists hold workshops in our collaborative space in the North Coast Mudworks Studio on Pacific Highway 101. By bringing artists in for workshops, we hope to inspire people to learn more crafts related to the earth and to support more local artists in our community and the PNW.
If you are an Oregon based artist or a visiting artist coming to the Coast, we encourage you to fill out an art contact form so we can offer an art workshop, run by you, based on your craft. We are always looking for more artists to run art classes on the Oregon Coast and share their craft with visitors and the local community.
