Pottery Workshops at Mud&Craft

Mud&Craft offers one time pottery workshops if you are briefly visiting the area or are interested in learning more about working with clay. A pottery workshop in Nehalem is a great way to try hand building with clay or throwing on the wheel for the first time.

Hand Building

Mud&Craft offers a variety of hand building workshops on the Oregon Coast. Hand building is a popular pottery technique that is perfect for people who have never worked with clay before. Each workshop will focus on a different technique. Slab building uses rolled out clay that can be cut into pieces and constructed to make a variety of forms, or draped over hump molds. Coiling is a method that uses coils of clay that are either rolled out by hand or by an extruder to make pots that can be shaped either by freehand or with the aid of a mold. Each coil is layered and attached, progressing to a wider pot. Pinch pots, one of the oldest methods of hand-made pottery are formed by shaping a ball of clay and pinching it into the desired shape. This is a great pottery workshop to take with your family or a group of friends if you want to learn how to make a vase, mug or plate. In this beginner hand building course, every participant will be able to keep one piece of pottery that they make with a focus on creating one single finished piece of pottery from one of these methods.

Get Centered

Get Centered is one of the best ceramic workshops offered at Mud&Craft for people interested in learning how to throw on the wheel. In this beginner wheel throwing workshop, participants will have a short introduction on wheel throwing with a focus on learning and not producing any pottery pieces. You’ll learn the basics of centrifugal force and how to counter it by anchoring and using your body.  This workshop is a great way to center yourself, by taking a break from the hustle and stress of life to get your bearings on the wheel. Taking this workshop is a great rainy day activity for anyone visiting Manzanita, Cannon Beach, Seaside or Nehalem.
